Abstract

Functioning as keystone species within subtropical and Mediterranean marine ecosystems, sea turtles play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance, including nutrient cycling and the preservation of critical habitats such as coral reefs. However, the combined impacts of human activities such as bycatching fisheries, habitat degradation, and climate change pose significant threats to their survival. This study reports the infestation of Ozobranchus margoi and its associated pathological effects in an adult female Caretta caretta nesting at Kızılot Beach (Antalya, Türkiye) on July 10, 2025. Morphometric measurements, including curved carapace length and width, were recorded, and the general health condition of the individual was assessed. A total of 16 ectoparasites collected from the axillary region of the right front flipper were identified as O. margoi based on their morphological characteristics. Macroscopic tissue alterations, including erythema and dermal erosion, were observed at the parasite attachment sites. Species of the genus Ozobranchus are recognized as potential mechanical vectors of Chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5, the causative agent of fibropapillomatosis (FP) in sea turtles. In this context, the present study highlights the importance of regular monitoring of ectoparasites and their effects on host individuals at Kızılot Beach for the conservation of sea turtle population health.
